Happy 60th Birthday, SA Air Force
A very special birthday party took place at
SA Air Force College on 6 March 2009. The guest of honor was
the SA Air Force College and the celebration was held to
honor the SA Air Force College on the occasion of its 60th

The history of the SA Air Force College goes
back to 7 March 1949 when a dedicated training wing under
command of Cmdt D.H. Loftus was formed. In 1950 the wing
relocated to Air Force Base Waterkloof and was renamed the
Air Administration and Staff School. The School changed its
name to the South African Air Force College on 7 December
1951 and finally moved to its present site Thaba Tshwane,
(the then Voortrekkerhoogte) in 1957.
Members enjoyed the party held on the
lawns in front of
the ‘Generals’ House’.
It is fitting that the birthday party took
place on the lawn in front of the historic General’s House.
The history of the General’s House dates back to 1903 when
it was built as a residence for General (later Sir) Gerald
Neville Lyttelton; having been designed by Sir Herbert
Baker, who was the architect of the Union Buildings in
Pretoria. The General’s House was the perfect backdrop for
the SA Air Force College’s birthday party.

It was a proud moment for the Officer
Commanding, Col J.W. Janse van Rensburg, when he proposed
the toast to the College and then proceeded to ceremonially
‘cut the cake’. The birthday cake was one of several cakes
beautifully decorated with the SA Air Force College 60th
anniversary logo in blue, gold and white. The social
committee was given the task of designing a new logo to
commemorate this special anniversary. Of the various designs
they came up with, the choice came down to the one that the
Officer Commanding felt most reflected the professional
image of the South African Air Force College.

It is envisaged that SA Air Force College
will host a SA Air Force College Reunion during 2009. The
birthday celebrations will also include the rededication of
the revamped Generals’ House. The festivities will continue
throughout the year culminating in a Gala Evening that will
be held in October 2009.
