small Overberg community in Protem will never forget 09 May
The learners of the newly formed pre-primary school
development center, will remember the “Big Bird” that
visited them and brought them sweeties & sport equipment.
AFB Overberg decided to donate money to two institutions
that have gone the extra mile in delivering unprecedented
service to the local community.
This was realized on 09 May 08 when the Base Command Council
flew to the different institutions to officially hand the
donations over to them.
After the handing over of the donation at Protem, the kids
took a stroll to the rugby field to take a look at the Big
Bird, which was a TFDC Oryx helicopter, and to talk to the
friendly aircrew. The sight of this impressive aircraft at
close range will be an experience they’ll never forget.
For those of us on board it was an experience to see the
Overberg’s Renosterfeld, the white “De Hoop” sand dunes,
sheep, ostriches and farming activities from above.
The 2nd donation went to the Child Welfare Centre of
Bredasdorp. The Base Command Council was welcomed with
traditional milktart and koeksisters. The chairperson’s
explained that the survival of institutions like these
solely depends on donations. The donation from AFB Overberg
couldn’t have come at a better time. All projects endeavored
by the institutions are of benefit to the community.
On our return to base, we were reminded of how privileged we
are to be able to fly in the Overberg when we saw the
heavenly view of the Arniston coastline with it’s exquisite
