There are only a few pivotal moments in one’s life. Such a moment realised on 06 March 2008 during a Wings Parade at AFB Langebaanweg where 43 members of the SAAF received their wings.

With perfect weather, hardly any wind (even on the West Coast) and soaring temperatures, the scene was set for one of the highlights of the Air Force calendar. The Parade was one to remember with the Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr M.L. George and the Chief of the Air Force on the podium the recipients smartly made their way to the podium one by one to receive their wings from the Deputy Minister and to usher in a new era in their lives and careers in the Air Force.

The 43 recipients consisted of 23 Pilots (including 2 Reserve Force Pilots), 8 Flight Engineers, 3 Load Masters, 8 Flight Attendants and 1 Air Photographer. Various trophies were also handed out and the best overall students in their respective mustering were:

a. Pupil Pilots Course 110/07: 2Lt J.E. Poolman

b. Flight Engineers: Sgt M.K. Malopa

c. Flight Attendants: Sgt D.E. Phokoje

All the spectators and participating members agreed that it was one of the best Parades ever, with a high standard of drilling from the members on parade and the recipients, which further emphasized what a truly proud moment this was for them.

As our newly qualified aircrew embarks on a new facet of their careers in the Air Force, we congratulate them and wish them well. May the skies stay clear, as you soar higher and higher, wear your wings with pride because you are now aircrew of the South African Air Force.
