Brigadier General A.P. Staunton

Brig Gen A.P. Staunton (Spike) was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on 24 February 1957. After completing high school, he joined the SA Air Force in 1974 as an apprentice Aircraft Mechanic and qualified as a technician in 1977. His aircraft experience includes various military aircraft types such as Mirage III & F1, Aermacchi MB-326 Mk I, Mk ", AM-3 & AL-60, Dakota C47/DC3, as well as civil licences for variants of Cessna, Piper and Beechcraft aircraft. After studying at the Tswane University of Technology in Pretoria, he obtained a National Diploma and National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1981. He applied for a commission and received his commission as an Officer in 1983. As Technical Officer, he served on various squadrons, depots, bases and commercial institutions eventually ending up at Air Logistics Command. His postings within the command include Resident Technical Officer at Atlas Aircraft Corporation and Fields Aviation, Staff Officer Mirages, Staff Officer Light and Maritime Aircraft, Staff Officer Air Transport Aircraft, Senior Staff Officer Air Transport and Maritime Aircraft, Senior Staff Officer Helicopter Systems, Senior Staff Officer Technical Policy and Senior Staff Officer Military Aviation Regulations.

Brig Gen Staunton is currently the Director Base Support Systems responsible for all aerodrome and airfield systems, infrastructure and facilities. Throughout his career, he has completed a number of courses and programmes in engineering, logistics, and system management. He has also completed international courses in Airworthiness, International Defense Management US Naval Post Graduate School), and Configuration Management.

Brig Gen Staunton is a certified member of the International Society of Configuration Management and certified in Configuration Management" (University of Arizona). He is a qualified accident investigator and flight safety officer (University of Southern California/lATA). Brig Gen Staunton has a Master Science in Engineering Management Degree from the University of Pretoria. He is married to Charmaine and has three children (one son and two daughters) and four grandchildren (two of each gender).

Hobbies include ski-boating, angling, DIY projects and reads extensively. He is also keen on learning the art of cheese and sausage making as a pastime after retirement.
