Brig Gen Alfred Zamile Vellem was born on 23 March 1955 in Korsten, Port
Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. He attended the Balazi and Tyutyu
Primary Schools and Zeleni High School in King Williams Town, where he
Matriculated in 1980.
He joined the Former
Ciskei Defence Force on 01 March 1981. From November 1983 till April
1985 he did his initial Pilot Training in Israel where he flew the
Cessna C152 and C172, the Piper PA18 and P28 and the British Norman
Islander BN 2A and 2B.
Upon his return to South
Africa he was utilised as a Station Pilot at Umthata, where he flew the
PA 28 and BN 2A and 2B aircraft.
In April 1994 Brig Gen
Vellem integrated into the S.A. Air Force. He attended a conversion
course at 81 Flying School Lanseria on the Cessna 172 and Baron
Beechcraft 58 Aircraft. From 1994 – 1996 he was Station Pilot at AFB
Langebaanweg where he flew the PCVII Aircraft from the former
Bophuhatswana. From 1996 to 1997 Brig Gen Vellem was at 68 Multi Engine
Flying School at AFB Bloemspruit. From 1998 till 1999 he was utilised
at 44 Sqn, AFB Waterkloof as a Station Pilot. From January 2000 till
Dec 2004 Gen Vellem was Officer Commanding, Forward Air Force Command
Post in Port Elizabeth. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel wef 01
January 2004 and became SSO Air THQEC, Air Operations. He was Officer
Commanding 21 Squadron, AFB Waterkloof from January 2006 till June 2008,
when he became Chief Project Officer, Air Transport at DAFA Defence
Headquarters. Brig Gen Vellem was promoted to the rank of Brig Gen wef
01 November 2011 and became the Director Air Transport and Maritime
Systems, his current post.
He completed his Junior
Command and Staff course at S.A. Air Force College in 1998. In 2004 Brig
Gen Vellem did the Joint Senior Command and Staff Programme and in 2008
the Executive National Security Programme at the S.A. National War
Brig Gen Vellem is the
proud holder of the Ciskei Defence Force Medals for Independence and
Commendation. He also has the Good Service Medals for both 10 and
Twenty Years and the Unitas Medal of the S.A. Air Force.
He takes a keen interest
in Sport especially Boxing, Wrestling, Soccer, Rugby and Tennis.
Brig Gen Vellem is
married to Nomvula, Eunice and they have four Children and 5 Grandchildren.
He will retire in March
